Sometimes we look at sights in nature but don't really see. While hiking in the woods the other day, it became a realization that we need to open our heart and eyes to see the beauty of the simple things in nature with each season. There is so much order and purpose in His creation. God has given us awesome beauty in this world to see and enjoy... if we would but stop to see and feel it. Join us as this blog is about stopping to see the real beauty around us...to touch and feel it... "Through the Lens".

Keeping Busy on the Natchez Trace

We arrived at our campsite at Fall Hollow around 4 o'clock.  Fall Hollow is located about 7 miles from the Oliver sales office.  We got set up and decided to head into town and grab a small bite to eat.
Hohenwald is not chocked full of choices and it was a Sunday evening so we opted for a burger from Hardees.   We settled in and got ready for an early morning.

We arrived at the sales office at 8:00 sharp and awaited for the service manager, Richie, to escort us to the factory for our tweaking!!  We left our Oliver with the techs at the factory and set out to entertain ourselves for the day.

Awaiting Delivery/Pick-up
Our goal this summer/early fall was to do the entire Trace.  We had originally planned to start in Nashville and travel all the way to Natchez, Mississippi.  Well, you know how those plans go!!!  The good news is we are doing the Natchez but not from beginning to end in one trip.  It started with Hurricane Irma and our desire to avoid all the high winds that were forecasted to come our way.  So we started in Tupelo and went down the Natchez and over to Vicksburg.  Now we are in the northern section from Nashville to Hohenwald.  On our drive in yesterday we explored the Meriwether Lewis section along with Metal Ford and some of the "old trace" that we enjoyed hiking a bit.

Fortunately, Hohenwald is right on the Trace so we decided to spend the day on the section north of Hohenwald.  Our first stop was at Sheboss Place which is the area where an inn for travelers operated by a widow and her Indian "second" husband.  He couldn't speak English very well so when someone would ask him a question he would answer...."she boss."

From there we headed to Tobacco Farm and a two mile drive through the original Trace.  At the Tobacco Farm we saw how the tobacco is hung to dry out in the barn.  The drive was like taking a trip back in time.  It is overwhelming to think of those that had walked this very path.  You can see how the path is actually sunken from all the many people that walked it through the years.  Oh how I love history!!!

Springtime is better for waterfalls
Mike took the next hike to Jackson Falls.  We had our little Shih Tzu with us since our "home" was at the factory so I stayed at the overlook with Nickie and Mike took the hike to Jackson Falls.  A little disappointing since the best time to view a waterfall is typically in the spring.  He did see some water falling and it was beautiful and worth the hike!!

The Gordon House dates back to around 1818.  This home is pretty much just as it was when the Gordon family lived there.  It served as a trading post and ferry at that time.  Mrs Gordon lived there until she died.

All along the way there were several overlooks and I must say the views were outstanding!!

Lunch time, so we pulled into a picnic area on the Trace
Nick wanted to eat with us
We finished the afternoon of keeping busy with a trip to Yoder's Homestead Farmer's Market.  Owned and operated by an Amish family.  A very interesting place that offers a variety of homestyle sandwiches, cheese and deli meats.  Along with home baked breads and pastries, spices, nuts and other items.  What we really loved were the homemade jams and jellies and the wonderful homemade soap.  We just had to have some of both!!   Can't wait to try them!!

Tonight we are camping in the parking lot at the sales office!!  We have electrical and our tank is full of water and we are cozy and comfortable.  Since they didn't finish the punch list today (that's another story) we will return to the factory tomorrow.

Oh no!!  We're running out of things to do to keep busy!!!  Wish us luck!!

  1. All men need to practice the phrase..."she boss." lol
One thing we have not done all these years is to visit a Tobacco Farm.

  2. I really enjoyed our trip up the Trace from Natchez to Nashville back in 2012. We did that trip in the spring and I want to do it again but this time from North to South in the fall. Thanks for bringing back those fond memories.

  4. Good Morning my Friend.... So where are you off to today? We are heading to the Smokies next week to try to see some Fall colors... Think we may be a week early though --but maybe at the higher elevations, we'll see some.

As you know, we always check out waterfalls... We've seen Jackson Fall --when it had water! ha.... YES---Fall is not always a good time to see waterfalls... AND--especially when it's dry like it is now.

I would love to stop at the Amish Farmer's Market.... And that ride on the back roads on the 'old' Trace would be interesting....

Hope you get Ollie all 'tweaked' and are back on the road.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  5. Yoder is such a common Amish name all over the country. When in the Lancaster, PA area we stock up on the Amish made jams, jellies, salsas and pickles. Nothing beats them. Enjoy yours.
