Sometimes we look at sights in nature but don't really see. While hiking in the woods the other day, it became a realization that we need to open our heart and eyes to see the beauty of the simple things in nature with each season. There is so much order and purpose in His creation. God has given us awesome beauty in this world to see and enjoy... if we would but stop to see and feel it. Join us as this blog is about stopping to see the real beauty around us...to touch and feel it... "Through the Lens".

Reacquainting Ourselves

Today is Veteran's Day!!!  A day we set aside to thank all the brave men and women who have and are currently serving this great country!!  It is because of their brave sacrifice that we live the life we do and have the freedoms we have.  Let us never forget them and honor them everyday but especially on this day!!  God bless each and every one of you!!

We left Tombigbee State Park with the intentions of driving to Quitman, Mississippi and staying the night at Clarkco State Park.  It looked like a very nice state park and would have been a nice stop but we arrived in the Quitman area around 1:00 and it was only another 2 1/2 hours to Rainbow Plantation!!  We looked at each other and said....Yes!!!!   So we decided to drive on into Rainbow on Wednesday!!  I think we were both tired of the Alabama/Mississippi driving tour and just wanted to be back in our site at Rainbow!!

Thursday we decided to try that lunch we never made at Big Daddy's Grill!!  We were so excited to get there we were the very first customers of the day!!!

We were seated by our waiter and knew instantly what we wanted.  I am originally from Daytona Beach, Florida so I grew up eating seafood and my favorite is shrimp!!  Big Daddy's is noted for their delicious fried shrimp!!  So I put my order in, the one that will undoubtedly disturb my doctor, for the fried shrimp plate!!!   Mike, who grew up in Tennessee does not favor seafood much so he ordered the delicious hamburger and fried onion rings!!

I think we both scored on this meal!!!  Ahhh, it was good!!!!

We drove around a bit in Fairhope, Alabama just getting reacquainted with the area!!  It was pretty cold Thursday, windy and overcast so not a great day for photos.

Fairhope is such a quaint town and has been a favorite of ours since our winter at Rainbow in 2010.   We'll be back to Fairhope on a sunny day and see what we can get into.  We have to experience one of those gorgeous sunsets off the pier in Fairhope as well.

Friday we took a drive down to the beach!!  It was a holiday for the kids in the Baldwin schools so we didn't stay too long since we were just scouting things out for the day.  We did manage to walk a little on the beach and take a few photos.

The sand here is so thick and white a little different from the sand on the beach in Daytona!!   The vastness of the ocean always amazes me!!  From oceans to mountains to the desert to the plains God has surely created a beautiful place for His children to enjoy!!

Back when we full-timed in 2009 we volunteered at a wildlife refuge...Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge in Texas.  We really enjoyed working there and learning so much so whenever we see a wildlife refuge we have to go exploring!!  We drove over to Bon Secour and walked one of their trails....Pine Beach Trail.  It is a 4 mile round-trip trail but we only did half of it on this day!!  I will do a blog post about this area next.

After getting re-acquainted with the area and ideas on what all we wanted to do over the next week or so, we headed back to Rainbow for the rest of the day.  It was a great day and it feels good to be back in the area again as well as back at Rainbow Plantation.

  1. Seafood! Who doesn't like seafood...Oh sorry Mike.
It is so cold here in Ohio. So glad to see some sun...even if it is only in the photos. Enjoy.

  2. Those live oaks are so beautiful. We've had a lot of cloudy days here in Blairsville too. Your beach pictures are starting to make me want to head back to Florida. Just curious, what do you tow your trailer with? We are considering buying a very small trailer and need to keep it under 4000 lbs.

  4. I would probably have chosen Mike's burger and your sweet potato fries for my meal. :) What a beautiful beach. We've never been to Alabama. Must try it sometime.

    1. The beach on the gulf is full of almost white sand, it is so pretty. I think Mike's onion rings were a bit greasy but he said they're good.

    1. It always fascinates me when we come to the beach...you see water until you can't see anything else. It is so vast!

    1. It was very fresh and very good. Being first also meant that they were not rushed doing other guests meals too.
