Sometimes we look at sights in nature but don't really see. While hiking in the woods the other day, it became a realization that we need to open our heart and eyes to see the beauty of the simple things in nature with each season. There is so much order and purpose in His creation. God has given us awesome beauty in this world to see and enjoy... if we would but stop to see and feel it. Join us as this blog is about stopping to see the real beauty around us...to touch and feel it... "Through the Lens".

Trying to Outrun Irma

We have been waiting to see what direction Irma was going to head. There have been so many possibilities!!!  For awhile we thought Irma would make landfall directly in Miami but when we got up Saturday we saw where she turned more west.  So it's still a wait and see game even for the folks at the hurricane center.  How does that effect us?  If we head north her remnants are projected to head up into Tennessee with 45mph+ wind gusts.   Areas northwest and northeast are looking very rainy and windy...so that leaves east and that is out because Georgia is scheduled to get a bad hit from Irma.  With those options out of the loop, we looked to the western or, you got it, a southern route as the best choices.

Why do we need to move at all?  Auburn, Alabama, our home base, is scheduled to receive winds of 35 to 50 mph with wind gusts over 60 mph.  We have a nice site nestled in the trees...lots of trees!!!  50 mph and gust over 60 is just not something we choose to experience when our home has wheels and we can leave.  Our Ollie weighs about 5800 lbs loaded.....not one of the big guys!!  Plus those trees can come down or lose limbs and damage Ollie!!  So we headed out Sunday morning...the day Irma heads in!!
After much weather channel watching, reading weather reports and even asking a few people their opinions, we decided to head northwest.  So tonight we are settled in our site at Barnes Crossings Campground in Tupelo Mississippi!!  We first thought about north and head up into Tennessee but upon looking at their forecast it showed lots of rain...lots and of course the dreaded wind.  We even took a look at lower Alabama simply because it remained fairly clear on all the maps.  But early this morning those weather reports began to show wind gust of 43 mph.  Still better than where we were but still high and of course there is always the potential for tornados.  So we finally thought north and west which led us to northwest and Tupelo Mississippi.  Why Tupelo Mississippi?  Why not?  We can see where Elvis, the King of Rock-n-Roll began his life.

So tomorrow we will return to the home where Elvis was born and tour some since it was closed this afternoon.  We are right on the Natchez Trace here and so we might head over and see a little of the Trace while here!
Our spot at Barnes Crossing Campground
We will stay here and hunker down until Irma decides to "go away."

We have to return to the Auburn area to get our drivers license for Alabama and then purchase our tags for the truck and Ollie!!
We can go "home" but so many lately have lost their homes!  So many can't go home because it is no longer there.  Please join me in keeping these fellow Americans in our prayers.  I read a book once that asked this question....what is the one thing that you can never lose?   God's love!!  When God is all you've got...God is all you need!!

  1. Wise choice to head to Tupelo, nice to tour Elvis' Birthplace, we did that years ago and drove the entire length of the Trace.

    1. Mike, we plan to do the entire trace the first part of October. It may take us a couple of weeks because we want to take it all in...at least as much as we can.

  3. I'm glad you decide to get out of Irma's way. That would have been what we would do. As long as I have wheels I'm not a hunker down kind of person. Prayers for everyone.

    1. Jim and Sandie, thanks for your comments, it has been hard to outrun such a large storm as Irma. I agree, many folks are in need of prayers.

  4. I'm glad you are safe. I hope Irma doesn't follow you there, but like you said, you have wheels. We're in Blairsville and keeping an eye on things. If it gets too windy, we will head to a hotel with the kitties.

Poor Florida and now Alabama is really getting hit hard. We are joining you with our prayers lifted up to the Lord for safe keeping of our fellow Americans.

    1. Thanks Paul and Marsha for your comments, it was neat seeing the birthplace of Elvis and learning more of his early years. Yes, there are so many that have been uprooted from Irma as well as Harvey and prayers for them are needed.
