Sometimes we look at sights in nature but don't really see. While hiking in the woods the other day, it became a realization that we need to open our heart and eyes to see the beauty of the simple things in nature with each season. There is so much order and purpose in His creation. God has given us awesome beauty in this world to see and enjoy... if we would but stop to see and feel it. Nick’s Back Home

DSC_3692

We picked Nick up at the pet hospital Sunday afternoon around 5:00. We were so excited to have him back home that we arrived at the pet hospital almost an hour early. He is special and we missed him.

        DSC_3639

He had acute colitis. According to the vet this can come on quickly and they really don’t know what exactly causes it. He did say the little dogs have such small tummies and intestines that they need to stay on their dog food and not change things up too often and NEVER give people food.

I confess he MIGHT have gotten some people food every now and then….but not often. I promise. I MIGHT have dropped a potato chip or small piece of bread from a sandwich every now and then. I’ve learned my lesson and won’t be so careless and drop things anymore. Of course he’s gonna hate my new found carefulness.

He was a pretty sick little boy for about 24 hours. They put in an IV and gave him fluids because he was badly dehydrated and then he started passing a little blood. That was the part that alarmed us all. With the great medicine and a calm evening in the hospital he was much better by morning.

He is getting better each day! He hasn’t gotten back all his strength yet but it is coming. He is eating his prescription dog food pretty well and he is now using the bathroom in the normal manner. Yea!

I thought about Rick (Rick and Paulette’s RV Travel) when Rick related the story to us of his dog, Rylie. It sounds very similar and Rick….when we got the bill it was way too similar. Nick’s one day in the hospital cost $459.00. He is worth it!!

We are so glad he is ok and home with us. He is a special little boy that fills up our lives with lots of devoted love and laughter.

Thanks to all of you for your sweet comments wishing Nick well. We appreciate your kind thoughts and always for taking time to stop by and visit. Have a great week!!

  1. That's terrific news about Nick and I'm so glad he's back home and doing well. I know exactly how happy you both were to pick him up and bring him home too, no matter what the bill was - we were the same way.

Rylie's problem has never happened again and the vet told us it was probably just something she ate outside so there really wasn't much we could do about it. Like I said before, Rylie is as good as new and back to her puppy self again so I'm sure your Nick will be his old self too in a day or so!

  4. It's wonderful to hear that Nick is back home and doing well. Our Shih Tzu, Zoey is four years old and I agree with your vet, that they should never eat table food. Our pets truly do become part of our family. I love Roger's quote. How true it is. They bring us so much joy and laughter just like Nick does for y'all. I tease Rollie and tell him that if we ever lack conversation, that with our pets we will always have something to talk about. LOL Gorgeous Pictures!!

    Love in Christ,

  6. So glad to see that Nick is safely back with the family! They sure can worry us parents. Our daughter's Schnauzer, Elsie, had a bout with pancreatitis (a lot like colitis) and it was caused by the same things. Even though we never fed her actual table scraps, she'd grab a bite off the floor now and then. It cured me of allowing stuff to fall on the floor!

Hopefully, little Nick will feel like his old self again real soon. Welcome home, Nick.

  7. So glad you were able to welcome Nick home! It is amazing what those beasts can do to your heart. Although we now travel with no pets, we have had our share in our lives. Our last was a rescued Black Lab, such a sweetheart! Beautiful flower photo!

  9. Just read about Nick. Glad he is on the mend. Your vet could have suggested a treat that is acceptable to his little GI system. After all, he is a dog and we like to spoil our dogs.

  10. I'm so glad that Nick is home and feeling better! Even though there are no more "people food" treats coming, there must be "little doggy" treats that are better for him that he will enjoy. :)

  12. So glad Nick is home and feeling better. I know the feeling when they're sick and in the hospital. You feel so helpless. It's surprising how these guys wiggle their way into our hearts so totally and completely. And there they stay. Hope he keeps on the mend and is his old self before long.

  14. What a cute little fella. Glad all is well and you know what caused it.

Pets! Somehow they get to us. I found a stray kitten last Fall. In January I ended up in hospital 5 days with Cat Scratch Fever. I had been getting progressively sicker for two months. Affected lymph nodes, spleen and liver. All well now.

Well, he still have him. His name is Lucky. Len named him that as he says the cat is Lucky I found him and not him.

Nick is lucky also to have found a loving family.

  15. No matter how little money
and how few possessions you own,
having a dog makes you rich.

We are so glad that Nick his home!

  16. That's great news! Glad to read this journal entry, for sure. Now Gerri, you'll just have to learn to eat without dropping food all over yourself and the floor. Yes, you can teach an old dawg new tricks so this shouldn't (emphasis on the word shouldn't) be too difficult for you. Not that I'm saying you're old, mind you!!

Love the pictures of the flowers. Taking pictures of flowers is one of my favorite hobbies.

  19. We are glad that Nick is home and well.

Our kids are always talking about how bad people food is for dogs. I guess when I was a kid and the dogs always ate table scraps on the farm, we may have been lucky. They all lived a long life unless they got to close to the bulls.

  20. Hooray for Nick!

I like the insects best. Nice job, Gerri. :)

  24. Excellent news! I have been offline for a few days and didn't know about him being sick, glad to here he is doing better! My folks yorkiepoo had the same problem a few weeks back. The doc told them they had to stop feeding her people food as well. She recovered quickly and now after much rebellion is finally eating dog food.

Hard to turn those sweet big eyes down, but it is for their own good :(

Nick is a cute one and lucky to have you both!

  28. So glad Nick is doing better! (I've lurked till now!)

That said, it's really not table scraps that are the problem- it's ANY sudden major change if you've got a dog with a really sensitive stomach. And if he's been on anything like the Hill's prescription diets, those are REALLY bland- any fatty food is especially likely to cause problems, even as it's totally good for a dog with normal digestion.
