Sometimes we look at sights in nature but don't really see. While hiking in the woods the other day, it became a realization that we need to open our heart and eyes to see the beauty of the simple things in nature with each season. There is so much order and purpose in His creation. God has given us awesome beauty in this world to see and enjoy... if we would but stop to see and feel it. Join us as this blog is about stopping to see the real beauty around us...to touch and feel it... "Through the Lens".

Our Golden Cody

                   DSC00215

Sue (Big Dawg and Freeway) was writing in her blog the other day about all the Tuckers that have made their appearances on the blogs lately.  It seems there are now three Tuckers.   Two of those Tuckers happen to be Golden Retrievers.  All pets are special and all have certain qualities that make them who they are.  Goldens are no exception.  They are people pleasers all their lives.

Our Cody came to be a part of our family some 12 years ago.  In dog years that makes him pretty elderly.  Does he know he’s elderly??  Nope!!  His little heart and mind will forever remain a young Golden.

He didn’t always live inside.  He once owned a huge backyard with his lovely mate….Jessie.  They were inseparable and where you saw one you saw the other.  Jessie loved to fetch anything and Cody loved to stand and look at you like “now why did you go and throw that?”  They remained together until Jessie passed away.  He laid beside her body all night and refused to leave her even after we buried her in the backyard.  He loved her completely and totally.  That is the love of a Golden.  He loves us the same way.

He came to live inside when we moved into the motor home to full-time.  Mike and I were both a little concerned.  He had never been housebroken, what would he do??  Well, I’m happy to say he did GREAT!!  His desire to please was so strong that he quickly learned that during his walks on the leash were the times he did his business.  He loves to walk with Mike on the leash.  He begins to smile and shake his big body whenever its time for a walk.  He loves to walk!!  He does not love to swim…nope!  Unlike Sue and Doug’s Tucker and Sam and Donna’s Riggs, he would rather walk along the edge of the water and splash a bit but no swimming.  Perhaps this is due in part from a lack of exposure when he was younger but remember, he’s not much on retrieving either!!  His love and devotion to his family is heartwarming and we love him in return.

Age is taking its toll on our Golden Boy!

His muzzle is now growing whiter and his hearing is failing.  He has to be looking at you for him to know what you want him to do.  We have to make sure we are with him wherever he goes….even in the backyard.   At night he still sleeps beside our bed….there is no room on the bed because our other loves are there, Casey and Nick, our Shih Tzus.

Cody is special…..he’s a Golden!!

  1. I'm with you on that one. Goldens are very, very special. All dogs are really, but there is something about a Golden, once you've had one in your family, you just want to get more and more. Our Jackson is a very special Golden.

  9. Wonderful, wonderful post. Although I have never had a golden, they are one of my favorite breeds. Wish they came in a travel size!! One of the best books I have ever read is "A Big Little Life, memoir of a joyful dog", by Dean Koontz. It is the true story of his golden retriever, Trixie. Have the tissues ready when you read this one!

  11. I have always felt dogs are the best Pals we can possibly have. Hours upon hours of endless love and entertainment. Reminded me so much of our Max and Checkers when they were still here. Nice photos and tribute to Cody.

  13. Take heart - our Black Lab, Sparky, live to age 15! So you could well have a few more years of Cody's devotion.

A few years ago we were camping in Gettysburg. We saw a coule walking two Golden's quite often. We got to talking with them. It was not Two but FIVE! They were traveling with FIVE large dogs in a 35 foot fifth wheel. Oh my. They were there from North Carolina for a show.

  16. Ah, we loved this post! Nothing finer than a Golden Retriever! We are owned by one - Raider the RV Dog! He's just like Cody: won't fetch and is afraid of water! I tell him he's an embarrassment to his breed! He just smiles! He's a big silly puppy at heart!

  17. Great post about a wonderful sounding dog. Cody is a real treasure and I hope he enjoys many more years of going for his beloved daily walks. It's funny how much our pets like getting on a leash to go for walks.

  18. What a wonderful post about a wonderful dog! You have been truly blessed to have him in your life. We've had two golden retrievers in the past and they were very special. One of them was, in fact, the best dog we've every owned - or that owned us! I better not let Maggie, our yellow lab, hear that though!

  19. What a touching and beautifully written post.
Grant and Kathy Webb forwarded your blog address to me. Cody is a most handsome Golden.
When my peeps moved in this house 28 years ago there was a Golden named Toby living next door.
The two leggers became very attached to Toby.
I'm kind of sweet on Raider(Webb)...which is what my post is about today.

  28. Traveling with Pets, especially Dogs is never a dull story. Usually something always happening with the dog to make us laugh.
We had a Golden Retriever named Levi when our kids were small. Great dog for the kids. But Bell the Black Lap was even better. We always knew where the kids were, because Bell would be sitting on the front porch of the house they were in.
Sarge the English Bulldog is our traveling Dog.

Love the pics of your Retriever.

    WE enjoy following your Blog.

  30. Hi Mike and Gerri. We had a sheltie that we call Cody and he was one wonderful dog. Died of throat cancer at age 8. We still miss him. Your Cody is beautiful and seems to be a most loving animal. You take care and have a very great weekend! Levonne

  32. Thanks for sharing about Cody. I didn't know you had a golden. We recently discovered what great dogs they are when "Sweet Pea" came to us in Georgia. She was the nicest dog I ever saw and it turned out that even though she was an outside dog, she aimed to please and came inside and was perfectly behaved. She ended up (quite miraclously) finding a wonderful new home in Tampa. We sure loved that dog!
